A single sapele thin board, precision-dimensioned for detail work and smaller-scale projects. Sapele is the exotic hardwood that earns a second look from everyone who handles it. Its warm reddish-brown color is just the beginning - the interlocked grain produces a signature ribbon figure that shimmers and shifts with the angle of light in a way that few other species can match.
Dimensions: 3/8" thick × 4" wide × 19" long
Species: Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum)
Origin: Tropical Africa
Sold as: Individual piece - ribbon figure intensity and color will vary by piece
Wood Characteristics
- Warm reddish-brown to medium-brown color with a golden sheen
- Interlocked grain produces a distinctive ribbon stripe or chatoyant figure that shifts with light
- Hard and dense - comparable to mahogany but with greater figure and durability
- Works well with sharp tools; interlocked grain can cause tearout on quartersawn faces - take light cuts when hand planing
- Finishes exceptionally well - oils and clear finishes bring out the ribbon figure and natural luster
Popular Uses
- Knife & Tool Handles - Sapele’s ribbon figure and hardness make for handles that look precision-crafted; the chatoyance catches light beautifully in the hand
- Small Boxes & Decorative Panels - The ribbon stripe creates a naturally elegant, bookmatched look on box sides and lids; pairs well with lighter species like maple or ash for contrast
- Inlay & Accent Work - A refined alternative to mahogany for furniture inlay, banding, and decorative overlays where understated warmth and figure are the goal
Each piece is one-of-a-kind. Ribbon figure intensity, color depth, and exact dimensions vary naturally. Figure is best appreciated under direct or raking light.
