A single padauk thin board, precision-dimensioned for detail work and smaller-scale projects. Padauk is one of the most visually striking hardwoods available - freshly milled boards burst with a vivid, fiery orange-red that deepens to a rich reddish-brown patina over time. Pair that with a straight, coarse grain and excellent workability, and you have a species that's as enjoyable to work with as it is to look at.
Dimensions: 3/8" thick × 4" wide × 24" long
Species: African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii)
Origin: West & Central Africa
Sold as: Individual piece - exact figure and color intensity will vary
Wood Characteristics
- Vivid orange-red color when freshly milled; mellows to deep reddish-brown with UV exposure
- Straight to interlocked grain with a coarse, open texture
- Moderate to high density - durable and impact-resistant
- Works cleanly with hand and power tools; produces red-tinted dust — use a dust mask
- Glues and finishes well; oils enhance color depth
Popular Uses
- Knife & Tool Handles - Padauk's bold color and durability make it a standout choice for handle scales, offering both visual impact and reliable grip
- Small Boxes & Decorative Panels - The vivid grain turns box sides and lid panels into focal points; pairs beautifully with lighter species like maple or ash
- Inlay & Accent Strips - A favorite for furniture inlay, cutting board accent strips, and decorative banding where a pop of warm color is the goal
Each piece is one-of-a-kind. Color, figure, and exact dimensions will vary. Freshly cut pieces will be brighter; color deepens naturally with light exposure over time.
